Our work since 1971 has opened doors for thousands.
As a 501(c)3 (a non-profit) we largely count on your help to fund our efforts. If you believe that families across Richmond deserve a home in a safe neighborhood, access to good jobs, access to good schools, and the ability to build financial stability and a better life, please consider donating today. Your tax-deductible gift helps us fight discrimination in housing practices, assist first-time homebuyers, and help families keep their homes.
Responding to COVID-19
Just like you, HOME of Virginia is concerned about the COVID-19 pandemic. As the coronavirus spreads throughout Virginia, our organization continues to serve our clients remotely and remains committed to staying connected to you during this time. We know that, beyond the obvious health concerns, the economic fallout of the necessary closures and delays will fall on those most vulnerable. While we are adjusting to serving our clients remotely, we know we will need to ramp up our services to respond to that fallout.
HOME administers the City of Richmond’s Eviction Diversion program, the only program of its type in Virginia. This program started in the fall of 2019 and has already diverted 122 evictions through the end of February. The program serves those who have received an eviction notice but do not yet have a final judgment. Though the courts have announced a continuance on eviction cases until June, there will be great need for resources to work with tenants facing eviction, especially once the sheriff’s department begins carrying out evictions once more. We expect an even greater amount of evictions to occur with the current unemployment rate and therefore lack of income from tenants.
HOME has provided foreclosure prevention services since 1989. The need for these services follows economic cycles, but we have been committed to maintaining that capacity in good times so we are ready to help when the need is great. We currently prevent about 200 foreclosures across the state, but at the height of the Great Recession, we served 900 families annually at risk of losing their homes. We are assessing and preparing to ramp up to that level again if the need presents itself. Currently we are funded at a very minimal level for this program.
