Housing is the foundation for opportunity. But throughout United States history, housing policy and practices have perpetuated racism and segregation. From federal laws that authorized redlining to local policies that permitting restrictive covenants and exclusive zoning codes, biased housing policy has made a lasting effect on our society.
HOME of VA is committed to ensuring equal access to housing opportunities for all. We believe that public policy is crucial to achieving this goal — working to shape policy that will combat housing inequality and dismantle a long history of discrimination that endures today.
The Virginia Fair Housing Law prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, elderliness, familial status, source of funds, sexual orientation, gender identity, military status, and disability. This landmark legislation, which HOME of VA has successfully worked to expand over the years, underpins our mission. At the General Assembly and in localities around the Commonwealth, we advocate to maintain and expand upon these protections.
