DESCRIPTION:Join HOME of VA executive director Thomas Okuda Fitzpatrick for
  the next conversation in our new series exploring the past and future pro
 spects for fair housing.\n\n\n\nUniversity of Richmond scholars Julian Max
 well Hayter\, Amy Howard\, and Thad Williamson will discuss their new book
 \, The Making of Twenty-First-Century Richmond\, with a special focus on h
 ow the politics and policies around where we live have shaped the capital 
 city we know today.\n\nHere's a preview from the book's publisher:\nRichmo
 nd\, Virginia\, took center stage globally in the summer of 2020 as an epi
 center of antiracist protests in the wake of the police murder of George F
 loyd. In a period of just a few weeks\, overwhelming public support grew f
 or removing Richmond’s Confederate monuments. Activists then transformed
  the remaining statue of Robert E. Lee into a shrine to African American r
 esolve\, to the Black Lives Matter movement\, and to Black victims of poli
 ce brutality. Coming to terms with Richmond’s tortured racial history\, 
 however\, is much more difficult than toppling symbols of white supremacy.
  ...\nThe authors reveal why change and progress has often been so difficu
 lt to achieve and why that matters\, with a focus on three fundamental pol
 icy areas: education\, economic development\, and housing. The result is a
  comprehensive assessment of urban governance in a major southern city in 
 the early twenty-first century\, as well as an accounting of the policy an
 d human consequences of both its limited successes and its recurring failu
